Ymir is a graduate of the 104th Trainees Squad and former member of the Scouting Legion. She is a person with the ability to transform into a Titan, and has knowledge of many of the secrets concerning the true nature of Titans and the history of humanity. She is a mysterious and complex character, holding her many secrets close. While not completely willing to trust Reiner and Bertholdt, she betrays humanity in exchange for Christa's safety. Little is known about her past or motivations, other than the fact she wishes to protect Christa at any cost after learning about her existence.

Ymir is presumably a human with the ability to turn into a Titan. However, the lack of information about the nature of her abilities makes it impossible at this point in the story to determine what she really is, that is, whether she is a human capable of turning into a Titan or a Titan capable of turning into a human or something else.

Most of her past is unknown, but she mentioned to Reiner and Bertolt Hoover that she had wandered for over half a century in the wild as a Titan before she was finally able to turn back into a human and infiltrate the city inside the walls. She seems to be an important and well known individual among Titans, as a Titan with the ability to speak the human language told a human that he was from "Ymir's people". Although her exact age is unknown, it is implied that she is perhaps at least a century old. So far, her only desire is to protect Historia at all cost.
